The Dangers of Guns: Man Dies from own Booby Trap

In class, we watched the documentary "3 1/2 Minutes, Ten Bullets" and investigated the shooting of Jordan Davis by white middle-aged man Michael Dunn. This case showed a lot about the dangers that can result from guns. As a result, I decided to research incidents involving guns and I came to this case that sadly happened on Thanksgiving and involves a man who kills himself accidentally from a booby trap he set up.

Ronald Cyr is a 65-year-old American man who rigged his home with a booby trap to keep out intruders. Unfortunately, his armed booby trap turned against him and shot him. The shot wasn't fatal, so Ronald Cyr was able to call the police in the to say he had been shot and upon arriving at the scene, police found a door that had been designed to fire a handgun to anyone who attempted to enter. Mr. Cyr was then taken to hospital but later died from his injuries.

For example, in February, a team of real estate investors walking through a home they had bought in Philadelphia discovered that a staircase had been rigged with a string which, if tripped, would have triggered a swinging knife. Another example was in September last year, where a man in Illinois was killed when he opened a neighbor's shed that had been rigged to fire a shotgun.

One of the worst examples was in October of last year, where a man in Oregon was charged after fortifying his home "like a scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark". FBI agents found a circular hot tub linked up to a tripwire, a fortified front door, animal traps and a wheelchair rigged with a shotgun that went off, hitting an agent in the leg.

It is important to consider the dangers of guns and whether or not guns should be legal. In the incident with Michael Dunn and Jordan Davis, one thing led to another and Dunn used his handgun to shoot at Jordan and his friends. Davis was killed. Similarly, Ronald Cyr accidentally killed himself. With both of these deaths and many more as a result of guns, should they still be legal?

  1. This case is a great example about one of the many things that can happen as a result of guns. The fact that these incidents happened multiple times is very shocking and makes me question the sanity of these people. Did this man just hate people coming on Thanksgiving? Why did he feel the need to do this?

  3. This is not the first time I have heard of these accidental death. Every year, a little over 75,000 people are shot by guns in the US, most of which do not happen with malicious intent. Personally, I would have no problem with guns being illegal, since they bring more bad than good (as seen by the examples above and many others). Even if guns are not made illegal, I believe our government should do something to impose stricter gun regulations much like they have done in Europe, where gun violence is much more rare.
