Where is Nick Hillary Today?

We all sat through hours of class, following the story of "Who killed Garrett Phillips?". We watched Oral "Nick" Hillary become a suspect and accused of murder in a town so small that the sheriff's deputy once dated the mother of the child you're accused of killing. It was clear that he was not treated fairly and was used as a punching bag for people to point the finger at when there was CLEARLY no evidence. Some reasons for his conviction was because some unethical lady wanted to use him to get elected as a DA or cause some questionable deputy wanted to take out his anger for being dumped. Whether you believe he did it or not, you would be turning a blind eye if you couldn't see the horrible and racist treatment he was receiving from AUTHORITY, the same people that are supposed to protect us.

So after long years of being attacked by neighbors, arrested, and put on trial; where is Nick Hillary today?

His life has clearly changed from this journey. In a town, where he was once a respected soccer coach at Clarkson University and athlete, he is now an outlier. He lost his job as a coach because of the legal issues. The schools "didn't want him back on campus". Hillary is still struggling to rebuild his life. He is now volunteer coaching youth soccer part-time and working night shifts for a company. He can now not continue down his previous career because of the murder allegations. Nick says, "You apply for a job, they will do their background check. That tells me that I will forever be in a disadvantaged position going forward unless I'm able to eradicate all this negative stuff around my name from the internet. And I don't even think that's remotely possible." To end on a happy note, Nick does say that it is a "great feeling to be able to work with kids" while being a volunteer coach.

Nick still lives in the same community. He says that "Nobody will ever look at [me] the same way. Nobody wants to interact with [me] the same way". The public has already basically decided that "this is our guy" and it has led to the distraction of his life. He even says that "it's like living on house arrest. You have to calculate your every move that you are going to make within the community. It really takes a toll on you." However, f you remember the adorable and heartbreaking scenes of Nick with his children, you will be glad to know that because he is on house arrest, he is almost full time taking care of his children. He says he's trying to remain strong for the kids.

A lot of people still view him as a killer. For example, John Jones, the town's sheriff's deputy and Tandy Cyrus' ex, states that he is certain Hillary is the killer. He isn't alone though, Nick's possible guilt is still a controversial issue in Potsdam.

Nick is trying to find justice. He has filed a civil suit accusing New York State Police, the St. Lawrence County prosecutors, and local police of violating his civil rights and racially discriminating against him. For example, Hillary was taken into custody two days after the murder and was STRIP-SEARCHED and sent home without his clothing. The same was not done ot other suspects.  He had filed a suit back in 2012 before he was arrested for murder. But since he has been acquitted of all charges, he filed a more extensive suit. he is still going forward with that suit.

REGARDING THE CASE
The case has remained an open investigation. There is said to be a new possible lead that has been turned over to the police.

Hopefully, the authorities have learned from Nick Hillary and will approach suspects and the case different this time around.

  1. It is true that what you post on the Internet stays there forever. Because of this, the articles connecting Nick Hillary to the murder of a 12-year-old boy are not going anywhere. Like you said, this makes it hard for him to pass background checks during the job application process. I think his experience should remind us to be careful about what we post and comment online. According to a survey of admissions officers at more than 350 colleges, 35% check applicants’ behavior on social media, and two years ago, 10 Harvard students had their offers rescinded because of offensive posts. What you post online does matter, especially now that we’re applying to college.

  2. I think Nick's only hope to re-establish a reputation for himself is to either move towns which could partially do the job, or if they find the actual killer, then I feel like people in the town would be more sympathetic. I also wonder how his kids go to school, and how they would be treated at school(even by their teachers). I'm sure that they would be kids in their school that ask them about their dad. If he can, I believe that he should try to move out across the country or somewhere far away, and try to rebuild there. In such a small town, until the mystery is solved, he must feel scared to step out of his house, and especially for his children, who go to school. I understand that it is very hard for him to get a job with all the background checks, but none-the-less, I think he should try to move out of that town and start trying to rebuild his life until this case is solved.
