His life has clearly changed from this journey. In a town, where he was once a respected soccer coach at Clarkson University and athlete, he is now an outlier. He lost his job as a coach because of the legal issues. The schools "didn't want him back on campus". Hillary is still struggling to rebuild his life. He is now volunteer coaching youth soccer part-time and working night shifts for a company. He can now not continue down his previous career because of the murder allegations. Nick says, "You apply for a job, they will do their background check. That tells me that I will forever be in a disadvantaged position going forward unless I'm able to eradicate all this negative stuff around my name from the internet. And I don't even think that's remotely possible." To end on a happy note, Nick does say that it is a "great feeling to be able to work with kids" while being a volunteer coach.

A lot of people still view him as a killer. For example, John Jones, the town's sheriff's deputy and Tandy Cyrus' ex, states that he is certain Hillary is the killer. He isn't alone though, Nick's possible guilt is still a controversial issue in Potsdam.

REGARDING THE CASE
The case has remained an open investigation. There is said to be a new possible lead that has been turned over to the police.

It is true that what you post on the Internet stays there forever. Because of this, the articles connecting Nick Hillary to the murder of a 12-year-old boy are not going anywhere. Like you said, this makes it hard for him to pass background checks during the job application process. I think his experience should remind us to be careful about what we post and comment online. According to a survey of admissions officers at more than 350 colleges, 35% check applicants’ behavior on social media, and two years ago, 10 Harvard students had their offers rescinded because of offensive posts. What you post online does matter, especially now that we’re applying to college.

I think Nick's only hope to re-establish a reputation for himself is to either move towns which could partially do the job, or if they find the actual killer, then I feel like people in the town would be more sympathetic. I also wonder how his kids go to school, and how they would be treated at school(even by their teachers). I'm sure that they would be kids in their school that ask them about their dad. If he can, I believe that he should try to move out across the country or somewhere far away, and try to rebuild there. In such a small town, until the mystery is solved, he must feel scared to step out of his house, and especially for his children, who go to school. I understand that it is very hard for him to get a job with all the background checks, but none-the-less, I think he should try to move out of that town and start trying to rebuild his life until this case is solved.
