The Submission of American Companies to create a Market in China

Since American companies realized their ability to sell their brand and product into the Chinese market, they realized that they had to bend and fit into the will of the Chinese censors. The NBA for example has a huge market in China where the sport of basketball has been picking up steam and becoming very popular. A few weeks ago the general manager of the Huston Rockets, Daryl Morey, made a tweet in support of the pro-democracy riots currently going on in Hong Kong. The riots in Hong Kong as obviously in direct opposition to the will of the Chinese image that they so desperately wish to maintain. The NBA forced Morey to make an apology in order to keep viewers in China, it was especially important for the NBA to keep fan interest in the Rockets since thanks to Yao Ming, the Rockets are one of the most popular teams. The apology stated that the views of Morey hurt the NBA's "friends in China" and that those views were in no way a representation of  the views of the league.

Many people are however not in favor of what the NBA and other companies are doing to get a following in China. Some politicians argue that this is wrong on on a moral level to bend over backwards to a communist country's censorship machine. Not all companies, or specifically shows are fitting into the communist censorship to gain followers. South Park who just last week released and episode entitled "Band in China" where the main plot of the episode is talking about Chinese censorship and how things like Winnie the Pooh are banned in china simply because some people said he looks the the leader of china. South Park too posted an apology to China which read like this:  "Like the NBA, we welcome the Chinese censors into our homes and into our hearts, we too love money more than freedom and democracy". This apology an obvious joke pokes at the apology done by the NBA.

In conclusion, the Chinese Market can be a great place to expand for American companies and generate more money for themselves, but should companies change their product to fit into the communist Chinese censors?

  1. This is very interesting to me because I don't recall talking about this. I learned how the people marketed and it was all basically based on china if i'm correct.
