His defense attorney said that he was innocent on the count that he was suffering from adjustment reaction to adolescents, which means that he was becoming an adult and he did not know what to do or how to react to that. This is just a crazy thing to and use as a defense, because it was just preposterous and there was no reason that this is a viable defense that could be used for this boy who should 100% be held accountable for his actions. Yet somehow this bizarre defense ended up working and here we are again with the same boy that still has yet to be punished for his actions.
After this whole thing went down Ethan still hadn't learned his lesson and had a couple more run ins with the law.

Wow, I would have thought after the incident in 2013, he would have learned his lesson, but clearly he didn't. I think it is crazy how someone truly believes they are better then everyone else and don't have to follow the same laws as the rest of our country due to their socio-economic status. As seen through the documentary as well as through these new implications he had with the law, I don't think it is all his fault. I do believe that a vast majority of his actions came from his raising when he was a child and the incompetence of his parents, but I do think he needs to hold himself accountable as well.
ReplyDeleteJust like you and Tripp stated, I would have thought not only Ethan would learn his lesson, but so would his parents, Instead, she let offered her support to escape to Mexico, when they both knew that officers were looking for him. This is another example of his parents being bad role models and letting their son get away with anything he wants because they have the money. They don't seem to care about the effects on other people. Even after he was found, 2 years of jail doesn't even seem that bad. For everything that he has done in the past, he deserves more time than that because I bet 2 years won't teach him a lesson. Because he has grown up to getting everything he wants, he is used to it. However, I don't believe that is an excuse for his actions. He should have known that the deaths of innocent people, results in punishment. Just like Conner said, it is sad that he admitted he was guilty, but didn't seem to feel bad or believe that what he did was wrong.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I want to blame Ethan, I believe that the environment in which a child grows up is the main factor as to what we do. This kid was born into an environment where the world revolved around him, and there was no such thing as a punishment. If any of us grew up in a similar environment, I'm sure we would be doing wild things because we never learned. Although it isn't possible to punish bad parenting, under these parents' parenting, something like this was bound to happen. I feel like their parents were lazy, arrogant, and self-centered. This child had no one to guide him, no one to parent him, so he really did not understand right from wrong. But you would think after this he learns his lesson. I'm sure there are many kids out there with parents similar to him, and this shows that bad parenting can really cause things like these tragedies.
ReplyDeleteThis case really interests me as it illustrates the way the society is impacted by money. Money not only threw him into this situation after being provided with each and every request throughout his childhood, but it saved him from the extreme punishment that would have been reasonable for his actions. This is similar to OJ Simpson, as with all the money he earned he was able to free himself from the punishment he deserved and was proven innocent for a certain period of time before continuing with his reckless and unlawful behavior. Though Ethan's path towards unlawful behavior may have been paved by the parenting he was provided with growing up, murder is unexcusable and he must pay for ending the lives of others. Although it is not possible, the parents should pay for the deaths as well, as they could have used their money to change the behavior of Ethan rather than help him escape from experiencing the consequences of his actions.
