Is OJ Simpson A Psychopath?

A few weeks ago in Global, we looked at what it meant to be a psychopath. After watching the OJ Simpson case study and hearing about the things OJ did throughout his life, I started to wonder if OJ could be considered one. So I looked at the Hare Psychopathy checklist to see if OJ qualified. To qualify as a psychopath, a person needs to be 30 or above. Each question can be answered with 0= doesn't apply, 1= somewhat applies, 2= definitely applies
        1. Excess Glibness/ Superficial Charm (2)
-The OJ effect
        2. Grandiose Sense of Self-Worth (2)
-Cared about himself, his reputation (lots of his memorabilia instead of family photos, boozing in Florida instead of raising his children)
        3. Excess Need for Stimulation (2)
-Was always working to stay in the spotlight, switched from football and advertising to movies keeping himself in the center of attention and ensure he wouldn't be forgotten as he had been in his early football years
        4. Pathological Liar (2)
-When he played golf, he kept spare balls in his pockets that he could pull out when his golf ball went missing
-When he told different people different stories of how he got the cut on his middle finger
-When he lied in his deposition for the Civil Trial about things they had proof were true
        5. Conning/ Manipulative (2)
-Everyone believed he was good and could never do anything like beat Nicole because he seemed so charming when he met them (ex. the Hertz CEO who was in shock when he saw OJ's true colors)
        6. Lack of Remorse or Guilt (2)
-Didn't ever cry over Nicole's death, never seemed to feel bad about what he'd done
        7. Lack of Emotions even where they are appropriate (2)
-Didn't ever cry over Nicole's death
        8. Lack of Empathy (2)
-Killed his kids' mother &
        9. Parasitic Lifestyle (1)
-While he made his own money and supported his wife's entire family, he tended to use his friends to get into what he wanted (ex. when he wanted to go into business and he began befriending people who could get him in)
       10. Poor Behavioral Controls (2)
-Beat Nicole when he was angry
       11. Promiscuous Sexual Behavior (2)
-Cheated very openly on both his wives while married
-Dated Nicole very openly even while married to his first wife
-Partied a lot in Florida
       12. History of Early Behavioral Problems (2)
-Arrested 3 times as a juvenile
       13. Lack of Realistic Long-Term Goals (1)
-Didn't want to be considered black, wanted to just be OJ
       14. Overly Impulsive (2)
-Beating his wife
-Excess drugging and drinking in Florida
       15. High Irresponsibility (not big on doing the right thing) (2)
-Didn't turn himself in when his lawyer promised he would
       16. Fail to Accept Responsibility for their Actions (2)
-Never took responsibility for Nicole's death
-Never felt he was at fault when he beat Nicole
       17. Inability to Commit/ Repeatedly Betray their Relationships (2)
-Cheated very openly on both his wives while married
-Dated Nicole very openly even while married to his first wife
       18. History of Juevenile Delinquency (2)
-Arrested 3 times as a juvenile
       19. When They Catch a Break, They Screw It Up (2)
-After getting off on murder charges, he got himself back into trouble with the armed robbery
       20. Criminal Versatility- Don't Care What Laws They Break (2)
-Committed both armed robbery and murder

Based on the Hare Checklist and things OJ's done, the checklist says he is a psychopath.

  1. I agree with the a majority of the characteristics listed because throughout the documentary and the trial you can clearly see some of them come through.(OJ effect, Sense of Self-worth, Manipulative, lack of remorse and guilt, lack of realistic long term goals.) I think that some of these had an effect on the outcome of the trial, one of them being that it was The Juice, OJ Simpson. OJ was adored by the public due to his charm and him being a loved football player, it was hard to believe that OJ would do such a thing. But it seemed true with all the evidence stacked against him, also with the calls from Nicole when OJ was a totally different, it showed that OJ was controlling and abusive towards things he couldn't control and he didnt like that.

  2. I think this post gives a lot of insight into OJ's behavior. Based on the checklist, he is definitely a psychopath and this brings new perspective to everything he's done. Combining the two traits, lack of remorse and impulsivity, it gives reason to believe OJ really did kill Nicole and Ron.
