After the release of the Popeyes chicken sandwich on August 12, 2019, extensive social media hype created a frenzy characterized by news coverage and excessively long lines. Popeyes and their rival, Chick-Fil-A, engaged in a Twitter battle that came to be known as "The Sandwich Wars". As Twitter users began taking sides in "The Sandwich Wars", the craze intensified and demand increased. By August 27, 2019, Popeyes officially declared a shortage and stopped serving the famed chicken sandwich. However, Popeyes assured that the sandwich would return soon. The hype surrounding the sandwich continued to grow as fans of the sandwich anxiously waited for its return. On November 3, 2019, Popeyes finally brought back their famous chicken sandwich in honor of National Sandwich Day. Merely one day after the Popeyes chicken sandwich had returned, people were already desperate enough to resort to violence in an effort to obtain these sandwiches. On Monday, November 4, 2019, 28-year-old Kevin Tyrell Davis was stabbed to death after cutting in line for a Popeyes chicken sandwich. Davis was stabbed around 7pm outside a Popeyes in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Davis was pronounced dead at the hospital. Security footage shows Davis entering the store then methodically cutting the line until he was confronted by another man. 15 seconds later, the two men went outside the restaurant and Davis was stabbed. Although the suspect currently remains unidentified, authorities have released a photo of the suspect and believe the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle. The rapid escalation of this encounter emphasizes how violence has become normalized in American culture. Through school shootings and police brutality, Americans have learned to be unfazed by senseless violence. Somebody was killed over a chicken sandwich this week: what does America have in store for us next week?

I have heard and seen a lot about this on social media, but I never knew that this would cause such extremities. It shows the kind of funny, but harsh reality of our world. I can not believe a life was lost over this kind of thing. It is honestly such a ridiculous reason to kill someone. Our world needs help.
ReplyDeleteIt's so weird that this would happen over food. I've heard of people getting injured and sometimes even killed during black Friday just to get deals on materials, but a chicken sandwich?
Deleteagreed, it's crazy how Americans have become so obsessed with materialistic things that they would kill someone for it. And as for the chicken sandwich, its just food I don't understand how people have become so violent just to eat a sandwich, its ridiculous. Can you imagine going out for dinner to try a sandwich, and ending up getting stabbed and dying? It's so sad to see people become so enraged over obsessions of such small things that don't even really matter in the end.
DeleteWow, I hadn't heard of this before. In some ways, I believe that America is becoming more and more greedy to get what they want. I wonder if this guy grew up spoiled, which is why he thought he could get away with it. On one hand, I think the person had the right to stand up and tell him that it is not okay to cut the line. On the other hand, he shouldn't have gone that far, especially over something so stupid. Because he went so far as to murder someone, he deserves to go to jail. I hope they find him, so he can learn his lesson and realize that he can take his anger out on something else.
ReplyDeleteWow this might be one of the most absurd murder cases I've ever heard of. I think you have a really good point when you say that Americans have become completely normalized to violence. Through constant media attention as well as entertainment involving violence, we as a society of started viewing violence as something that just happens and cant be changed. This is the type of case I'm sure Global students will be learning about in the coming years though, especially if the defendant comes up with an odd defense.
ReplyDeleteI've heard quite a lot about this on social media. I agree with your points about how violence is normalized in America. I also think that the amount of attention the media gives to crimes and violence might encourage people to do such things. Someone walking into Popeyes to get a chicken sandwich, and having a knife on them?? This is the most senseless crime I've heard of. I'm extremely curious as to what the defendant's defense will be. I have heard of things like this happen on Black Friday, when people are fighting to buy things. Lives are being taken for the most senseless reasons and with weapons so handy to people, it's almost inevitable that more of these situations will occur.
