8 year-old Girl Strip Searched?

On Friday, Virginia Government, Ralph Northam said he had suspended a policy that allowed prison officials to strip search an 8-year-old year who was visiting her father. Northam said that he was going to further investigate and review their procedures. The reason behind this strip search was because the dad's girlfriend and the 8-year-old girl were being circled by a Virginia Department of Corrections by the trained dog to sniff for contrabands. From there, the dog signaled the officer and he had to search them both. The heartbreaking thing about this is that the girl had to see her dad through a glass window. Where the officers went wrong with this illegal search was because the Director of Communications, also known as the DOC, policy states that a legal parent or guardian must consent to a minor being search. The girl's mother said things like, "She's a minor, she a girl. She was traumatized." Although the girl wants to continue to see her dad, she won't be visiting him any longer due to this incident. When I first came across this story, I thought it was crazy to think that officers would strip search a minor. I understand that sometimes, unfortunately, parents use their children to smuggle in contrabands, but this us unacceptable for an 8-year-old to go through. I hope that the prison officers learn from this incident to make sure that nothing like this ever happens.

  1. I did my Law and Society project on an illegal strip search similar to this. It is illegal to strip search a minor without legal parental consent. This also endangers the child to be traumatized for life. I am confused as to why the daughter was strip searched when she could not have even touch her dad. Seems very unrealistic to me.

  2. It's unfortunate that the girl couldn't even have a peaceful visit. It's already difficult enough to visit your dad in jail, and then to have to deal with this on top of that isn't fair. I understand that they were concerned, but I think that they should have been able to handle the situation differently and that they should have had more consideration about how the girl was feeling.
