An Unnecessary Death - Leonard Deadwyler

In 1966, Leonard Deadwyler was on his way to the hospital with his pregnant wife who was in labor. He was going to the nearest hospital that was 20 miles away and on the way he ran a few red lights. On one of those lights, he was stopped by a police officer where the conversation between the two was heating up. When the officer was starting to get angrier, he resorted to taking his gun out and killing him on the spot. According to the officer, Deadwyler looked to be drunk and not in a good state to be driving which was denied by Deadwyler's wife. Many locals think he would not have died if there was a hospital closer to their neighborhood.

In order to get justice for Deadwyler, his wife sued the city of Los Angeles for wrongful death where she was being represented by Johnnie Cochran. He is best known for helping OJ Simpson and was a part of his "dream team." Though this time, they lost the case and justice was not served. Since they could not get justice served, there was a medical center built in the area dedicated to Deadwyler and his family. In addition to this, many people started to protest and make rallies to show that they did not tolerate what the LAPD was doing to African-Americans.

This is another example of police brutality and shows similarities with other cases we've learned in class. For example, Mike Brown, Rodney King, etc., show that because you are African-American, you are automatically the bad guy because you look sketchy. This shows that police officers can lie as much as possible in order to help make them be free and not go to jail for killing an innocent person.

  1. This instance is surprising since it doesn't seem like Deadwyler did anything wrong. I think it is perfectly justified to run a few red lights in order to get someone giving birth to a hospital, and most police officers would probably give him a warning and tell him to obey the lights instead of killing him in front of his pregnant wife. This just shows the officers true motives were not to protect and serve the community which isn't the first time for the LAPD.

  2. This shows that times have not changed and that there has been no change in the past 50 years. I agree with Courtney that the officer should've given him a warning for running red lights. There was no need for the officer to conclude to shooting Deadwyler, when this situation could've been handled with more patience and control. I also find it shocking that the civil case was denied and Deadwyler's wife could not get justice for him.
