On October 7th, 2019, California State University Long Beach received an online credible threat, about a possible school shooting. This placed the school into an automatic lockdown, forcing students to hide and barricading themselves in their classroom. There was one main issue with this that the students faced, and that was that most of the classroom doors do not have locks. This made trying to feel safe on campus very hard. There was no way to lock the doors so if there was an active shooter, they could barricade the door, but it would be easier to open since there is no lock stopping the door from opening. Everyone was getting really nervous and wanted to leave because there was no way that they felt safe at school, but the professors told them it would be best if they all calmed down and stayed in the classroom and didn't move.
In response to this, some students have started a petition to get the president of the school to change the doors, so they have locks on them. They said that this would make them feel very safe at school and they would be able to lock themselves in a classroom in case of an emergency. The president responded to this and said it is a work in progress. I agree with the students because there have been a lot more school shootings recently and you want to make sure you feel safe there and if your classrooms don't even have locks how are you suppose to feel safe. If anything it makes it easier for the attacker to get inside the classroom and cause harm.

I find it completely unacceptable that none of the doors at the school have locks on them. Doesn't that violate SOME regulation in schools. I cannot imagine going to a school without a lock on the door, because we have protocol procedures to go through when we have a school shooter threat, and a primary steps in this is to LOCK THE DOOR. Since High School shootings are much more common, I feel as if colleges may overlook the possibility of it happening at their campus.
