TikTok is an app that basically replaced both Vine and Dubsmash, it's an app where you make short funny videos and share online.
Some problems occurred these past few months with the app.
One issue was a family room Illinois was in a lawsuit against the app for collecting data from a minor with no knowledge of doing so of either the minor or the parents. This brings into question of why?
Another lawsuit that also was filed against TikTok. it was for sending a users data to people or servers in China. Can this benefit the Chinese government in a way?
An interesting thing to note about both of these lawsuits is that TikTok is a Chinese run app that ONLY operates in the US and due to this, the US government is deciding if this app is a national security threat.
The investigation of TikTok is still going currently.

I think that if Tik Tok follows the law that information from minors can not be distributed back to them, then I think it is a safe website. There is a certain level of responsibility when going on a website like that Tik Tok. Someone must know when they are put in a dangerous situation even if it is online. There are multiple precautions that Tik Tok has to ensure the safety of their users like blocking other accounts.
ReplyDeleteI think it's pretty suspicious that TikTok is a Chinese run app that only operates in the U.S. It's not surprising that minors are using the app, but I think that parents should be held responsible for managing what their child does online. A popular app, like TikTok, that's used by many minors should be safe, so if there are suspicions of it not being safe, then I hope there is a proper investigation conducted.
ReplyDeleteI think that any social media platform, especially one that records video footage like TikTok, should be used with caution. This reminds me of Roll Red Roll in which videos, texts, and pictures were the main source of evidence against the boys who were convicted of the sexual assault. While the boys deserved to be convicted for their crass actions, the case emphasized how nothing done online is truly private. In the Steubenville case of Roll Red Roll, a man ultimately plead guilty to hacking into the football team's group chat and exposing incriminating information. It is always important to watch what you are saying online and remember that what you say online can have consequences in the real world.
ReplyDeleteJust like Evelyn mentioned about TikTok being a Chinese run app is suspicious. Though the reason why teenagers use it is innocent. I do believe that the users are aware of knowing what they are uploading and knowing right from wrong. There has been cases where this app was used in an unsafe manner like how Isha pointed out and it is TikTok's full responsibility to make sure that content like that is taken down and deleted. Perhaps further processing the videos in order to maintain a safe environment for everyone should be required.
