Jersey City Shooting

Yesterday a deadly shooting on a Jewish Supermarket killed a police officer and five civilians. After revisiting the documentary on the dark side of the internet and hate to study for the final, this sounded eerily similar some of the themes expressed in that documentary. Even though the Mayor of Jersey City claims it to not have been a hate crime, the New York Times reported that the two people responsible for this had posted anti-Semitic posts on their social media.

Could this terrible tragedy have been prevented though? Since they two men posted things on their social media that could be suspicious is that enough evidence to keep an eye on their activity? Even though everyone has their right to freedom of speech, I believe that if your activity online can be considered a stepping stone towards possible violence (generally in extreme cases), the government should be able to monitor what is being posted in an attempt to possibly stop anything that could happen, such as in the case of this tragedy.

  1. I agree that one’s activity on social media can be used to prevent crimes from occurring, but at the same time, so many people are posting everyday which can make it almost impossible to manage all users unless something is reported. Similarly, people often post things for attention without taking what they say seriously which can leave room for a lot of doubt on whether a crime will truly be committed or not.

  2. I also agree that the government should be able to step in and monitor people's social media posts. At the same time it is very controversial because it gives the government power to monitor everyone's data. It is difficult to maintain privacy and safety at the same time, but due to the amount of attacks I think the government should have the ability to search over people's data from suspicious activity.

  4. We live in a world where in just a few taps of a screen we can exchange messages with people all over the world. Sometimes these messages can show hints of very dangerous acts. Other times people are just messing around. Either way I think it is very important for people to be careful for what they post, because it can have dangerous consequences. I also agree that the government has the right to oversee speech over media. In this case the event could have maybe been shut down if the suspicious activity on their social media was spotted earlier.
