California mother, Maricela Magana Ruiz, was arrested on Monday after authorities found her 3-year-old son tied up inside a burning house with a plastic bag over his head. While firefighters in Southern California were called to Maricela's house, they found Ruiz herself, bound by her feet, in her bedroom.
She had allegedly tied the young boy at his hands up in his bedroom, put the bag over his head, and was then booked early Monday on suspicion of child endangerment. We are unsure about the cause of the fire. Ruiz had also tied herself, but at her feet, with something similar to shoe string. They were both transferred to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
It wasn't clear if Magana Ruiz has a lawyer, because Jail records did not list one. However, an official with the Ventura County Jail said that Ruiz HAS been released on a $50,000 bail.
A question that I have is, do we think it is reasonable for Ruiz to be let out on bail? I personally think that this woman, along with child endangerment issues, has mental issues as well. Perhaps Ruiz is depressed? Suicidal? I personally think that the only way that Ruiz should be released from jail is by admitting herself to a mental hospital where they can figure out the root cause for this incident. I am unaware if her son has been taken away, relocated, or whom he is living with, but I know for a fact it should not be his mother.
This is a crazy story. I wonder how obvious it was that she tied up the boy and placed the bag over his head. To answer your questions about if it is reasonable to release Ruiz, I think the only chance to be released would to plead insanity. What she did was attempted murder and she knew what she was doing.
