Social media can have both positives and negatives to it. Here's a list of negative effects and their reasoning.
1. Depression - too much time on social media can adversely cause your moods to change if you spend more than 1-2 hours.
2. Cyber bullying - it's easier to hide behind a screen when we are talking or responding to someone. you can cyber bullying without even realizing it. It makes it easier for bullies to find there next victims.
3. Fear of Missing Out - it's when someone gets anxiety about missing out on a positive experience or feeling g someone else is having/ getting, which is caused by spending too much time on social media.
4. Negative Body Image - seeing Instagram models on your feed doesn't help you self esteem or your own self love for your body and it makes it harder for those to do so.
These are all very valid downsides to Social Media. One I think you forgot to mention that is very important is how easy it is for people to spread misinformation. For examples, one study found that 45% of Americans get their news from Facebook. Now not all of the info they are getting is necessarily wrong, but the danger about trusting social media is that anyone can say anything and not be fact checked about it.

I totally agree with all your points. In many ways, social media brings out the worst in people because they have the freedom to express how they truly feel about other people while being anonymous. But on the other hand, there are some pluses. For instance, social media is a great way to connect with others who you don't see as often. I have friends who live on the other side of the country, and on the other side of the world, and it's amazing that I can see what they're up to. But I do believe that social media has more negatives than positives.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all these but I'd add a few. For example, people now love to live their lives to impress others. About a year ago, this ice cream shop called Icicles basically came up and became extremely popular just because of Snapchat. Kids would go to Icicles primarily to get a cool Snapchat post. I believe that rather than doing what makes us happy, many people live their lives to impress people and are basically living their lives for something other than themselves which I feel is problematic.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the specific downsides you pointed out for several reasons. The main reason why is because in today's society, teenagers specifically girls are too worried about their image having to look a certain way and ultimately affects them. This is a huge problem because many people's job is to post about their bodies, knowing that they are bringing down so many people, but people are in it for the money.
