One person who was a catalyst for this movement, Pete Frates, has passed away due to this condition. Although it is unclear if he started the trend, it began to gain speed after he and his family began daring each other to dump ice water on their heads. As a former college and professional baseball player, he had a bit of a following, and the trend became popularized from there.
Although there is still no known cure, instances like this show the power of staying informed and how raising awareness can help provide a solution, even if it's just posting or sharing a video in support.

I heard about Pete Frates' passing yesterday, he died at just 34 years old. In terms of the trend, I remember those days where every second post on social media would be the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. It was amazing to see so many people around the world show support for him and to be willing to dump a bucket of ice water on their heads to raise awareness and money for the disease. When the internet comes together, big things can be done. Hopefully with the money they raised, they can find a way to help find a cure to the disease.
