Wrongful Convictions

Our justice system is not perfect. It never has been and it never will be, nor will any justice system in the world for that matter. Every year, it is estimated that around 10,000 innocent people are convicted of serious crimes. The same can be said for the amount of guilty people that are not convicted for their crimes.

One example of wrongful conviction is the Central Park Five. The boys spent years in prison after being wrongfully convicted for the assault of a jogger in Central Park. It wasn't until many years later the actual perpetrator turned himself in.

Wrongful convictions happen for many reasons. Whether it is through false confessions like the boys of the Central Park Five, the failure of eyewitness identification, or the possible contamination of evidence, thousands of innocent people are locked up in prisons around the world.

  1. It is always sad that the justice system is not perfect, and that sometimes lady Justices' blindfold works against the innocent. Alan Dershowitz said that he would rather see 10 guilty people be free than 1 innocent person be found guilty and sentenced to prison.
