This morning, January 23, Michelle Carter was released from prison. She served less than one year even though she was sentenced to 15 months for involuntary manslaughter for Conrad Roy’s suicide. Why is it that her sentenced was shortened?
Michelle Carter’s sentence began in February 2019, meaning she served 11 months and 12 days before being released. Carter’s stay in the Bristol County House of Corrections was shortened due to “good time” credit. This awards up to 10 days per month to inmates who display model behavior by attending programs and classes, additionally working inside of the jail. She now begins her five-year probation period.
Is it fair that Michelle was released early? Was justice served for Conrad?
Some may argue that because of her exemplary behavior while serving time, she earned her freedom. But at the same time, 15 months was what was believed by the judge for justice to be served for Conrad and by allowing Michelle to be released early, I get the impression that justice for Conrad is being disregarded.

This is crazy because I didnt even know that Michelle Carter was sentenced in 2019. I thought that this had happened around 2013 but I guess I was wrong. This is very interesting how how they sent her to jail for something that I saw as a crime but I also thought that it was Conrad choice in committing suicide because he didnt have to listen to what Michelle was telling him if he truly didnt want to do it he would have never done it in the first place. I feel like they just blamed Michelle for Conrad choice, and because they also strongly believed that it was her fault because of all the evidence they had on Michelle through the phone and talking to people that knew her saying she might have told him all that for attention and so that people would feel bad and sorry for her.
ReplyDeleteSimply put, if I was in Conrad's family I would see this as not being justice for him. While I agree with the sentiment that it was a horrible crime and therefore deserves a harsher punishment, however I still see this case to be the fault of Conrad, and Conrad alone as both he a Michelle Carter were clearly mentally ill and they both saw death as the better alternative to the pain that Conrad was experiencing. Michelle did her time for the crime that she was convicted of, and do to not being a physically violent offender I see no problem with her walking the streets of this country and going to whatever therapy is needed to not have another incident like this again.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Michelle should have served her full sentence. Even though she got out early because of good behavior, Conrad will never get his life back. 15 months is nothing compared to a life ended. But also, even though she got out early, she will have to carry her mistakes with her for the rest of her life. She already has an uphill battle in life because she will always have that suicide tied to her name. Overall, I think that 4 months probably wouldn't have made a difference either way. If she served it, the public and Conrad's family may feel that justice was served, but in the end, a life was ended and nothing can bring Conrad back.
ReplyDeleteShe shouldn't have been released because then Conrad didn't really got justice if she just got out early than expected
