As most of our class is reaching the voting age of 18, I think it is very important to recognize the goals and values of each of our candidates whether you are supporting democrats or republicans. Here is a small list of the top candidates and a brief summary of their campaigns.
TOP RANKED CANDIDATES:
Michael Bloomberg - is the billionaire former mayor of New York. Bloomberg is a Democrat turned Republican turned independent turned Democrat again. He wants to run because he is convinced that he'd be better and more competent at the job than anyone else. Bloomberg's bid will likely center on his pet issues of gun control, climate change, and fighting the liberal wing of the Democratic Party
Joe Biden - The former vice president, a senator from Delaware. Biden has wanted to be president since roughly forever and thinks he might be the best bet to win back blue-collar voters and defeat President Trump in 2020. But Biden seems reluctant to end his career with a primary loss, knows he's old and is possibly out of step with the New Democracy Party.
Bernie Sanders - Vermont Senator and self-described democratic socialist before his runner-up finish in the 2016 Democratic primary. He wants to run because Sanders is passionate about redistributing wealth, fighting inequality, and creating a bigger social safety net.
Elizabeth Warren - Warren wants to address American inequality with a wealth tax, imposed annually on "ultra-millionaires", to pay for benefits, including universal free or low-cost childcare, for "yacht-less Americans". Fortunes greater than $50 million would be taxed at 2 percent. Billionaires would pay 3 percent. The proposal has greater than 60% support and would raise $2.75 trillion over 10 years.

I was watching the election last night and from where I left off, Biden was in the lead. However, the elections are not over yet. Although I am not 18, I think I would have voted for Bernie Sanders because he has great ideas about making the economy better and bringing more equality to the United States. The only part worrisome is that he and Biden are pretty old compared to other candidates. However, I believe that they have more expertise and wisdom as to how the elections go and what would make a great president.
ReplyDeleteI can’t believe how much money Bloomberg wasted on campaign ads–$500 million or $233,333 every hour. This just goes to show that you can’t buy the presidential title. Though money is necessary to launch a presidential campaign, it is not enough. With all that wasted half a billion dollars, Bloomberg could have paid off student loans for 150,000 people, bought houses for 2,200 homeless people, or replaced all the lead pipes in Flint ten times!
