Presidential Race

Today, two democratic candidates dropped out of the race for President: Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar.

Pete Buttigieg was the Former Mayor of South Bend, IN. He is currently 38 years old. Although Buttigieg was fairly popular, I think many people didn't believe he could win the election due to in inexperience compared to the other candidates. Although he was young and probably more favorable with the younger population, he wouldn't have been as successful later on. After a few more years of experience, or potentially being VP for one of the other candidates, Buttigieg will have a much better chance of winning the Presidential Election in a few years.

Buttigieg wants to provide Medicare for all who want it with a public healthcare alternative. He also wants to end surprise billing and limit the cost of out of network providers. In addition, he wants to enforce mental health equality laws.

Buttiegieg's stance on education includes making tuition free or reduced for low to middle-income families. He also wants to make student debt tax free and forgive loans after 20 years.

Amy Klobuchar is a United States Senator, originally from Minnesota. It's not very surprising that she dropped out since she didn't have a huge following in the first place. In addition, compared to the other candidates, she didn't have as good of a chance beating Trump. Although we are in the 21st Century and have come along way, the country isn't ready for a female President. Unfortunately, that says a lot about our country, but much of the older population still believe that old, white men should rule.

Klobuchar wants to provide a non-profit, affordable public health insurance option. She also wants to lower the cost of prescription drugs by regulating drug companies. Like Buttigieg, she was to enforce mental health equality.

Klobuchar's stance on education includes making 2-year community college free, and waiving or reducing tuition for the first 2 years at a 4 year college for low income students.

Both candidates plan on endorsing Joe Biden.

  1. I find that the fact that these two candidates have dropped out of the race right before Super Tuesday without much warning not very smart. Since many of those participating in Super Tuesday have already cast their votes for these candidates, they risk alienating their supporters who are now unable to change their votes for someone else. Since these people's votes no longer count, they may feel less willing to support other candidates like Joe Biden. I believe that they should have waited until after Tuesday to announce the end of their campaigns, but sadly this is not the case. Democrats fear their party being divided because there are so many different candidates with different views, and have decided to put themselves behind those who are 'most likely' of winning the election. While understandable, I think such ideas are misguided since people may not be happy with the choices they are given and not vote at all (similar to what happened in the last election).

  2. I think that Buttiegieg has interesting ideas. Many of them I support and would love to see him put them in action. However, I do think his idea of education being tuition free is concerning because people of higher class will end up paying even larger amounts of taxes. This would harm families such as anyone in this area as we already pay a large amount of money for taxes. I think it's interesting that the two presidential candidates with similar ideas both dropped out. Hopefully in my lifetime, there will be a female president because I think that it will inspire others and be something different.

  3. I think dropping out of the race was not a bad idea, it just had poor timing. Since the two that dropped out our the two more moderate candidates it is a good strategy because now they can center their support on one moderate candidate instead of having the votes cast across three different ones. I believe the issue with politics today is that people are becoming more and more extreme in order to combat their opponents who also have become more and more extreme. This is an issue we do not want, and I think we need to shift back towards being more moderate country.
