Prisoners with COVID19
As I have heard, there are some prisons that are letting some of of their prisoners get out earlier than their expected date because they fear that the prisoners will get the virus. A public health expert has warned that prisons and detention centres provide ideal incubation conditions for the rapid spread of covid19, as the first case of the virus in a UL inmate was confirmed. Countries such as Spain and Iran have ordered the release of many prisoners due to the risk of virus transmission among detainees and jail staff. The UK government issued guidance stating that if there was a significant outbreak of covid19, "cohorting"should be used to put all those infected together behind locked doors in prisons, detention centres, young offender institutions and secure units. A report by Prof Richard Coker, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicinem warns of the substantial risk of the virus spreading at a particularly fast rate in locked establishments such as prisons and detention centres, in a process he refers to a "cluster amplification". On Wednesday the first case of covid19 in a UK prisoner was confirmed at Strangeways prison in Manchester. The inmate was taken to hospital and there are no further confirmed cases of covid19 at the prison, although the Ministry of Justice said 13 prisoners had been put into isolation as a precaution.

I personally think having prisoners released may be fulfilling in the prisoner's mind. However, agreeing with public health experts, it makes more sense for prisoners to stay in prison because they are literally already quarantined 24/7. Going into the public and going home is going to be worse and more of a risk than staying in the prison.
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting, for some of the prisoners this is a good thing to get out early so they can see their family but their are other that will be a dangerous to society.
ReplyDeleteI believe it is important to prioritize the health of the prisoners and release them early from prison if they are demonstrating symptoms of COVID-19. It is also important to make sure that the prisoners that are released early to be put under house arrest to make sure they remain quarantined and isolated. This will prevent them from spreading the virus inside the prison and outside the prison.
ReplyDeleteSince many prisons are not very hygienic, I fear that once prisoners start showing symptoms, it might be too late to protect the rest of the inmates from infection. Since tests are limited and supplies such as masks for both prisoners and prison staff, the best way to prevent the spread of the disease is to reduce overcrowding in prisons. Even with prisoners being put in cells, the disease could still spread. If they are outside of prison, they may put the public at risk but at a lower rate than in prison due to people staying at home and less overcrowding. This will not only protect prisoners, but the people who work at prison facilities as well.
