A little over a month ago, the Trump administration limited and started revoking the Visas of Chinese news reporters. Then, China retaliated by expelling at least 13 US Journalists from major publications such as The Washington Post, New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. Not only are actions like these escalating tensions between the two superpowers in a time when cooperation is key, but also, when the administration presents a policy that seems to blame people from a certain place, people are bound to pick up on it and maybe take undesirable actions. What do you guys think? Do you think that the ban is going to help lessen the spread of the virus? Do you think it could lead to hate crimes?

At first glance, it seems that Trump is trying to minimize the spread of the virus by sending the reporters home, as he requested that all abroad Americans return home as well. However, due to the fact that he called Covid-19 the "Chinese Virus" it seems that his actions were not well-intentioned. Although the Chinese government neglected to inform other countries of the true impact of the virus, it's not the time to place blame. People should be focused on preventing the spread but instead they're lashing out. There have been so many reports on hate crimes against Asians because many people blame them for the spread since the outbreak began, or seemed to begin, in China.
ReplyDeleteI think there is a bit more tension surrounding racism due to coronavirus than other illnesses in the past. For example, no one really questioned the travel ban put in place when ebola first broke out so I dont think that closing the border from high risk places is a bad thing. Of course, treating it like people from these countries have the virus or started it is completely absurd but that's a different story.
