Engel v. Vitale

In the 1960's parents would complain about their children having to do prayer after the pledge of allegiance. In all of the school this was optional for the kids but parents still didn't like it.  They complained about it and went to court. In the prayers the kids would say,"Almighty God, we acknowledge upon Thee, and beg Thy blessings upon us, our parents, teachers and our country." Many parents stated that this was violating the establishment cause of the first amendment. After this the Supreme Court  decide that schools will no longer be able to do prayers in class because it was violating other religions traditions like people that might have been Buddhism, Jainism, and Daoism hold that Hindu or Chinesse or whatever gods have nothing to do with religion as they define it. This is why schools don't do prayers anymore.

  1. I think this was a good decision by the government. By forcing students to say the pledge of allegiance that is in violation of their free speech and freedom of religion. I think if you forced all students each day to say I love my country no matter what but meanwhile some of those students were being oppressed by the country how could that be freedom of speech? If that is not what you believe in you should not be forced to say it.

  2. I think this was interesting because I didn't know that back then students had to say a prayer after the plea of allegiance.
