Ethics Vs Morals

Morals are focused on an individual's beliefs, while ethics are focused on a group's beliefs.

I believe that the state should be obligated to teach public morals. Although people may not think they are growing as a person every day, they are and school is a big part of it. If schools taught public morals, we would understand ourselves better as individuals and learn what we believe is right from wrong. This will help us in the real world when we are out living on our own. Knowing yourselves as a person and what you believe in, is very important. (You don't want to be naive!)

However, I also believe that the state should be obligated to teach public ethics. We are growing with the help of our friends, family, and community members. In addition, knowing what our morals are will help us understand our ethics. We are constantly in group settings, such as work, school, sports, etc. So, we need to know what is important to us, in order to understand what is important to everyone as a collective group. It is also important to figure out who has similar morals and ethics to you, so you are surrounding yourself with the right people.

This would all be easier to understand if the school was obligated to teach public morals and ethics because we would be educated on what they are.

  1. Who are we to determine which morals/ethics are 'correct' or just controversially outspoken? And of those choices, which ones should be taught and which ones shouldn't? What determines the line not to cross? Even if we might not choose it, who's to say someone else won't justify it?
