White privilege
I remember from a young age my parents ingrained in me the harsh realities of systemic racism. I knew if the police were to pull me over to pull over into a well lit area, and to keep both hands on the wheel at all times. I knew to call a loved one and to keep them on the phone just in case. I knew to narrate my actions to the officer before doing them, and to always move slowly and carefully. Entering into only elementary school, although unaware of the concept of systematic racism I could still see it play out in front of me. I noticed how when talking about the police, my white friends were not given warnings or instructions on how to handle the situation. I noticed how their voices didn't shake with the weight of the same fear I held. It only began to add up to me as I grew older and continued to see discrepancies between me and my white peers, and began to educate myself. Lucky for you white people, you don't have the same things on your mind as we do. You will never have to worry like we do of becoming a victim of law enforcement or the system itself. As we have seen happen to our uncles, cousins, friends, or brothers. You will never know what its like to be the statistics you read. It means you never have to worry about how your hair, skin color, or how your cultural accessories could be negatively perceived. White privilege means you get the privilege of living your life unaware, and unbothered simply because of the color of your skin. Its because these things don't directly effect you the same way they do us that you get to live your life ignorantly turning a blind eye. THAT is your privilege.

I think the pulling over scene from Queer Eye is a great example of white privilege. When the police officer turns on his lights, the white men are still joking around because the thought of police brutality doesn’t even cross their minds. Police officers do not use unnecessary, excessive force on white people daily, so they don’t worry about it the same way people of color do. On the other hand, the men of color in the car are visibly freaking out. In an interview, they said that at that moment, they felt they were getting pulled over because they were people of color in the South. They weren’t going too fast. They weren’t being reckless. They weren’t breaking any laws. They felt it was entirely because of the color of their skin. They also worried about aggravating the police officer and what that would lead to. This demonstrates how white people aren’t constantly reminded of their race, which I agree is a privilege. https://www.facebook.com/QueerEyeNetflix/videos/370275663456712/
ReplyDeleteI agree with your point that a part of white privilege is being able to be unaware of your surroundings in the same way that people of color have too. I relate to the part where you said that your white friends didn't have the same fear that you burdened, because I myself do not carry that same fear. Though I think the law enforcement system is rigged in a very large way- I myself have not experienced it first hand. I feel a lot fear for my friends who may experience this, and pray that government can pass certain laws to restrict racist cops of being able to do the things they are so used to doing without being punished.
