Brother and sister in Mountain View were arrested by the police for bringing Guatemalan families and minors to the United States for forced labor and sexual slavery. Detectives in this case are still looking for additional victims of human trafficking by these siblings. Carlos Garza, 33, and Evelia De Maria Galvez, 41, were arrested on Dec. 20 without incident. Garza is now being suspected of multiple counts of human trafficking. Whereas, Galvez is suspected of being an accessory to this crime. Garza also goes by the names Gabino Galvez and Mynor Tobar.

Many people were affected by this brother and sister. Even after they found some of the victims police still are suspecting multiple are yet to be identified. They're asking anyone who may be a victim of Garza or Galvez to come forward with whatever they have. Please, if anyone knows of someone who went missing around this time- even if you don't think its anything, contact 650-903-6300 to share what you know.

I agree that many people, such as myself, are blind to situations like this. Whenever we are talking to friends or family that aren't from around here, they automatically assume that Los Altos is a nice and fancy place, where nothing bad happens. However, there are always going to be certain areas in cities, that don't follow the typical stereotype that we believe. Yes, Los Altos is a privileged area that we should be grateful for. However, we should continue to be aware of our surroundings, no matter where we are.
ReplyDeleteEven though the area we live in appears to be safe, I agree we still need to be cautious. We need to let people know where we’re going, and if we’re meeting up with someone unfamiliar, we should bring a friend. This especially applies to people we meet online. Earlier this year, a 46-year-old man from Mountain View met up with a 12-year-old girl from Sunnyvale he had met on a dating website. He then took her back to his house and raped her. Thankfully, when police searched her phone, they were able to identify the man she was talking to and save her. Sadly, these incidents happen. We need to be aware.

ReplyDeleteI agree that something like this, something we think rarely happens or something we believe doesn't happen near us can quickly alter our perspective on the community. We always assume we are living in a safe place because things like this are almost unheard of. However, with this story coming out, it is a reminder to always be cautious and to consider the number of situations like this that go undiscovered, and possibly question if these cases are unheard of because they don't happen, or they are unheard of because they stay under the radar.
ReplyDeleteI agree that is a false assumption to think that just because an area is perceived as safe we should think that crimes only occur in far off places. While this event is represents truly atrocious acts occurring our community I think it would be wrong to change how we perceive our safety. The odds of crimes occurring are still very low and kidnapping in of itself is very rare and normally is done by people we know.
ReplyDeleteIt's always surprising to find out about something awful happening close by. This is indicative of what kind of bubble we live in, and that there are still typical atrocities committed under our noses. If we do not acknowledge things like this, it will only continue. We can only fix the problem by accepting that there is a problem.
ReplyDeleteThis is crazy because where you least expect it to happen it happens at. I don't think that anywhere in this country is save to say you have to always be watching out for your back and like you say not talking to strangers. Reading this really interested me more into reading because I did not know either that this was happening here where I live it was something new to me. I also believe that just its because where we live we shouldn't think that it's a safe area because no where is safe all these awful things happen everywhere.
