Most Ridiculous Lawsuits

In the assignment "Hot Coffee," we learned that people can sue for the smallest reasons and possibly still have a chance at winning. Although her case seemed silly at first, once we got to know the full story it was clear that she deserved the money that she received.

In another example, a man named Allen Ray Heckard filed a lawsuit against Micheal Jordan and Phil Knight, the founder of Nike. His reason to sue was that he looked too similar to Micheal Jordan and people often mistaken him for Jordan. He claims that he suffered from emotional pain. After the public offered their opinions about this ridiculous case, he decided to withdraw his claim. I believe that he should have never made the claim in the first place because Jordan and Nike shouldn't be required to give Heckard millions of dollars for something that they have no control over. They aren't the reason that he looks the way he does. I'm glad he didn't get any money because that would have proven to the public that people can make small and stupid cases like this one and possibly receive money that they don't deserve.

I believe that these lawsuits should be allowed because it gives people the opportunity to sue for money for a small case that may have affected them. Instead of sending people to jail, it still gives them a punishment that is fair for what they might have done. However, I think there should be some kind of restriction of what cases are being looked at because cases like these are unnecessary and a waste of time.

  1. Yeah I think that all lawsuits should be allowed because if they are ridiculous the judge can easily dismiss the suit. The is no real harm in just denying their claim and ending the case. Besides wasting time hearing out these cases does not harm anyone. It also is empowering that people can file a case if they feel wronged in any way. Adding restrictions might make people more hesitant to file a lawsuit.

  2. I agree that all lawsuits be looked at, but also that there needs to be some rules as to what type of lawsuit is justifiable. This case seems to be all for money because there is no way you can sue someone because you look like them. That's just a waste of time for everyone and there is no need to create a lawsuit for having similar appearances. This is just another example of things people shouldn't do.

  3. I agree that all lawsuits should be looked at no matter how ridiculous, because even if the reason for suing is stupid, at least it will be a quick case. For this case in particular, I am confused as to why Nike is being sued? I also am confused as to what Michael Jordan has anything to do with his appearance?
