Why Do People Steal?

At least at some point in your life someone is going to steal or from you or maybe you'll find yourself stealing from someone.

People steal for many reasons, financial hardship, mental illness ( Kleptomania) , or simply because they are trying to fill some sort of void in their life.

Kleptomania, or compulsive stealing is a common cause of theft that a lot of people tend to forget. This type of stealing comes from psychological compulsion instead of the desire to profit or gain something material or financial. Kleptomania causes people to steal things that they can easily afford. Most kleptomaniacs feel remorse or guilty after stealing.

There are many other factors for people stealing. Some people steal in order to survive. Others simply enjoy the rush of stealing or steal to fill an emotional or physical void in their lives.

Stealing is also caused by jealously, low self-esteem, or peer pressure. People also may steal to prove their independence to act out against family members or friends, or because they don't respect themselves or others.

This is connects to the case of OJ in 2008. In OJ's case when memorabilia was stolen from him the man Bruce Fromong stole from OJ because he needed the fame and also wanted the money. When OJ realized his belonging were taken from him that had sentimental value he took it into his own hands to steal his stuff back. This is an example of someone stealing out of not having the respect for other as well as seeking gain in stealing.

  2. This is extremely interesting, as the common way to think about it is just that people who steal just want the item and aren't in the position to get it themselves. Usually you just think of people stealing on the street or breaking into cars or homes to get valuables but Kleptomania is another case. I never knew that there is an illness in which people who enjoy the rush of stealing to fill an emotional or physical void in their lives. I just read an interesting article that explains how people often take things from hotel rooms and in other situations because they can justify it in their minds. They claim "Well, I've paid a lot for this hotel room" so I can take a box of Kleenex. When people justify their wrong actions, that's when people can do things they usually wouldn't without feeling a reason.
