The Justice System and Rights

Image result for oj trialThe OJ Simpson trial is one of the most iconic, intriguing, and important trials of all time. Being a famous football star, his identity, and people's opinions on him were no secret. Although most evidence points to OJ's guilt, the evidence is not reliable.

Since the methods used by the LAPD and the prosecution were proven to be incorrect, the evidence lost its credibility among jurors and rightfully so. When people are put on trial, they are expected to receive a fair trial. Considering this evidence as acceptable would not be fair considering the mysterious drops of blood showing up weeks after the murder, the blanket from Nicole's house coming in contact with her body, improper collection of evidence and surprisingly a lot more.

Our justice system is built on the notion that an individual is innocent until proven guilty. Since most of the evidence that would have locked OJ away for decades was unreliable, the court could not very well prove him guilty because of reasonable doubt.

Since a cop with a record of discrimination and use of racial slurs found one of the most crucial pieces of evidence, it's credibility was completely jeopardized. This also cast doubt among the jury, especially since many of them were included in the trial simply for their race. Discrimination and racial profiling is something many among the jury could relate to which dramatized Furhman's impact on the trial even further. Not to mention the gloves found at the scene didn't even fit OJ when he put them on during the trial. Although there are decent explanations for this, such as the fact he was not taking his arthritis medicine, and the leather gloves could have shrunk from being soaked in blood, all the jury saw was gloves that did not fit.

Although it is pretty clear that OJ had committed the murders, the justice system worked in favor of his rights. Ultimately, the evidence was not strong enough to convict him, and there were way too many errors to prove him guilty without a reasonable doubt.

  1. I think you did a great job describing the main events in the case. This short blog gives a good example on how the main events actually effected the outcome of the trial. Also I think you did a great job explaining the courts rules and boundaries. I do disagree with the fact that it is pretty clear that he committed the murders. There is too much evidence proving the cops were corrupt that you can not ignore.
