Jahseh Onfroy, commonly known as XXXTENTACION, died on June 18, 2018. Yet, his music is still being released and his death is commonly still discussed. His second posthumous album, Bad Vibes Forever, was released on December 6. In celebration, an installation was set up in Miami where photos, memorabilia, and murals were displayed.
Onfroy’s BMW i8 was displayed at the celebration, which was “the car of his dreams”. Fans felt this was insensitive and triggering since it was the same car that he was fatally shot in. This adds to the already controversial topic of his death and how his legacy should be remembered. It’s one thing to release the unreleased music that was in the making during Jahseh’s passing to continue his legacy, but by continuously holding events for him and trying to keep him relevant in the public seems like an exploitation of his death. To me, it seems like the family’s way of using his death to generate income for them, and I think that shows their priorities and lack of morals.

I believe it is one thing to remember who he was and the music he created, but I agree with you that it seems like his family is using his death as a way to generate revenue. A lot of the time if a celebrity passes away the family might create a charity towards something that meant a lot to the person, but rarely do you see the family use the death as a marketing technique to stir anticipation for a new release and then profit off of the persons work. Everyone has their own morals and it is up to the family to decide what choices they make, so if they want to continue doing what they are because they feel it is right, I see no reason to stop them.
ReplyDeleteI believe that there are most likely enough little bits of lyrics that he has said to make it possible for X to continue to release new music possibly forever. It is not hard to splice everything that he said to create a new song many times over.
