I Murdered my Mother
This true story was written by Josh Tartar about his childhood and the murder of his mother. When he was four, his mom sent him to live with his father. However, his father didn't act properly and would get angry when he tried to leave his room for food. This would lead him to become aggressive and lock Tartar in his bedroom all day.
After a few years, he moved to his mother's house, where she had a new husband and a son. His mother constantly acted out on him because he was a constant reminder of her ex husband. As he got older, his mother beat him more and more. The one time that he talked to his teachers at school his mother informed him that if he said anything to Child Services, she would kill him. Of course, he believed her and when they came, he kept his mouth shut.
When he was 14, his brother began to get beaten as well. He did everything he could to take more of the hits, in order to save him from the beatings. However, one day they couldn't take it anymore. Tartar grabbed his step father's rifle, shot his mother, and quickly returned to his room. Him and his brother hid the body and came up with a lie to tell their mother's friends. After awhile, his step father found the body and immediately called 911.
He went straight to juvy, followed by a treatment facility until he turned 18 years old. Once he turned a legal adult, he was given two months rent, a couch, and a visit from a parole officer for the next six months.
I believe that he deserved the punishment that he got, but I'm glad that he wasn't sent to jail or held for an unreasonable amount of years. Yes, he committed murder, but it almost seemed necessary for his circumstances. For his whole life, he went through crucial beatings that everyone fears going through. Despite what he was put through, he kept his mouth shut and even took responsibility for his brother. It is heartbreaking to go through abuse for that long and not have anyone there for you. Both of his parents treated him the same way. Family is supposed to be the people who love you the most and treat you the best. Obviously, for him this wasn't the case. He knew he was going to have consequences when he committed the crime, but it was worth it to him. It was either kill his mother or go through the pain for who knows how much longer. Do you think that his punishment was just or should he have gotten more time?

This is interesting and seems sort of like a "stand your ground" case. After the endless abuse and beginning to watch his brother get beaten as well, he was in a constant state of fearing for his own and his brother's safety. The fact that the mother even threatened to kill her son proves that he was in danger being in her care, and if he was too afraid to tell anyone, he probably thought he had no other option. Additionally, the fact that he and his brother simply hid the body and returned from their room shows that they were so far removed from their mother, they probably didn't even see her as human anymore, more of a monster. Although his reasoning was probably justified given the circumstances, no one has the right to kill someone just as no one has the right to beat and torture someone. Their mother received her ultimate fate and punishment, and Tartar received his.
