Kamala Harris Drops Out
Yesterday, Senator Kamala Harris dropped out of the 2020 Democratic Presidential race. According to an email Harris sent, she said "My campaign for president simply doesn’t have the financial resources we need to continue, but I want to be clear with you: I am still very much in this fight.”Although I don't personally follow the Presidential candidates in depth, I know that if Kamala Harris continued, she would have made history, being the first black woman in office. Her influence could have made a huge impact on out country. Young girls would have a powerful female figure to look up to. But because of her financial burdens and her decline in the polls, it would have been difficult for her to continue successfully. The New York Times states her competitors have already been trying to get Harris's people on their team. But despite dropping out, she still has so many supporters. Just within her campaign, she has made change happen, and she will continue to do so, even if she isn't in the White House. Her campaign started with her leaning on her families history, while also finding a happy median between "the party’s moderate and progressive ideological wings" (The New York Times). Although she may not be President for this upcoming election, there's hope for VP.

I agree that Kamala Harris would have inspired many young girls and women if she had made it to the White House. She is interesting as far as Global because she was a prosecutor. She was on the side of going after criminals, first as the San Francisco district attorney and then the California Attorney General, the highest lawyer in our state. She claims she tried to change the tough on crime policies but she was in the middle, not progressive. She wanted to be "smart on crime" not tough on crime, and did not want to lock up petty drug offenders. She was against the death penalty for a 21 year old man who killed a police officer. But in the past 15 years she was not very progressive in making change in criminal justice. She has refused DNA testing that could help exonerate a criminal, and she agreed to keep evidence from the jury that showed a witness against the defendant was not credible. Many people see her as supporting the policies that have made the U.S. have the highest prison population in the world.

I agree with everything states in this article. I feel like in the time that we are in I feel like it is important that young women are empowered by women in power. With the gender roles being a part of typical american culture, its important for young women to know that they are just as capable as any man in this country. With a women for president especially a women of color it would create a huge change in this country. For a women to even fight for this position it has already empowered a lot of women I can only imagine if she were to be elected.
ReplyDeleteIt's devastating to hear that she dropped out of the race. Although I'm not clear on why she wasn't receiving enough funds, I assume that it was because she didn't have enough support for being in the race. People don't want to see a woman in that position of power. It was already an accomplishment within itself that she was running for president, but it would have been empowering to women all over the world if she would have been elected.
