Lyrics in the Courts

Many times in the court famous rappers have had their own song lyrics used as evidence against them. Recent rapper YNW Melly produced a song which authorities claimed linked him to a murder which happened two years ago. Their strongest evidence was Melly's description of what happened. The rap music community has not taken this lightly. The community is claiming that it is the same as an, "actor playing a role in a movie". Artists also believe that their music falls under the first amendment and therefore should be protected by it. It has also been released that when rappers are on trial 80% of evidence comes from their music.

More recently inside of the courts judges are not allowing lyrics as evidence unless it, "shows a clear nexus" that ties the person to the crime. This has aided recent rappers but there are still many rappers who have been guilty due to their lyrics.

  1. This is a very interesting post because it is relevant to us now. I see what you are getting at and I agree with you. I think that what rappers use in there lyrics should not be able to be used against them in the court of law. If they Put one man on trial for his lyrics couldn't every genre of music be put under trial then, because all music is basically saying the same things, just with different beats, and the way they say the lyrics. But if you are only going to target one genre that just seems wrong and you should not be able to do that with the legal system.
