sex assault case roil a school
How will we make it easier for teens in high school to talk about sexual assault? For some, this may be a hard topic to talk about but it's not something that we should just brush under the carpet. A teen in Damascus, Maryland has gotten sexually assaulted in the boy's locker room of his school by his own teammates of the football team. The school did do an investigation but the parents of these kids were never contacted. The school claims to work closely with the police department but the school did nothing about it. The commander of the police department said in his interview that he is not part of this case but for the past 9 years was teaching the schools principle what to do in incidents like this. This can be connected to the Roll Red Roll documentary when the girl at the party was sexually assaulted. The school didn't really do anything right away. The football coach never punished his players for the thing that they did. These two are hand and hand with all the interviews and investigations that they had to go through. The schools both didn't want the football players to get in trouble for their actions as they were a good football team.

I don't know why people find it so controversial to teach students about sex and "problems" surrounding it in high school. It isn't until a crime of sexual assault happens that a school actually places importance on it. This should change because I think it will educate people who believe sexual assault isn't important and isn't an issue.
ReplyDeleteI think that teaching about sex in school will be a much better way to educate students that teaching abstinence. If students are properly educated, they will know about consent as well as how to practice safe sex in order to protect kids. This is one of those topics where ignoring it and acting like it isn’t an issue doesn’t work, it is important for kids to be educated in order to make the right decisions.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Evelyn, I believe that every school should talk about sexual assault and not pretend like it doesn't exist. It bothers me that we are not talked about these kinds of things early in the year rather when a case similar like this occurs. By teaching us about this and talking more about how one should be safe at parties, because believe it or not they do exist, I think less cases like this will occur.
