The McDonald's Hot Coffee Case

A 79-year-old Stella Lieback in 1992 bought a regular coffee from McDonald's through the drive-through when she spilled it on her self. Then she sued Mcdonalds and she won nearly 3 million for her burns from the hot coffee. People all around thought this was a joke. To be honest I also thought this was a joke when I first heard about it in class. Like it wasn't like Mcdonalds spilled it on her. She spilled it on her self. But then when people realized how bad the actual burns were, they quickly changed their minds about it. She suffered third-degree burn, the most serious kind. She had to have skin graft on her inner thigh. Stella offered to settle with 20,000 but Mcdonalds didn't want to go over 800 so they took the case into a trial. Now Mcdonalds has stopped selling very hot coffee. There have been many people complaining about the hot coffee Mcdonald's sells.

  1. This case definitely seems like a joke at first, it seems insane that someone would sue a restaurant over a cup of coffee. Although, at second glance, it most definitely isn't a frivolous case. McDonald's heated their coffee so close boiling point that it could cause second or third degree burns. Stella Liebeck took the right course of action by suing McDonald's as it's dangerous for thousands of patrons a day to be handling it or even drinking it. However, it's saddening to know that part of the public still believes this case is frivolous. Liebeck's intentions with her lawsuit was to hold McDonald's accountable for their dangerously hot coffee temperature and to prevent such severe burns from happening to anyone else.
