The US government currently has a travel ban implemented and quarantined nearly 200 people in California. Some claim that the ban and quarantine and doing more harm than good, but should we be taking these precautionary actions to prevent this deadly virus from spreading? A senior scholar at John Hopkins Center for Health Security Jennifer Nuzzo said "We should do the utmost to protect public health... But we have to make sure the measures we're implementing aren't worse than the virus itself". This is the first federal quarantine since the 1960s with smallpox. Others claim that it is limiting their rights and liberty to a greater extent than what is necessary.
As we see this virus unfold, we must find a way to balance safety measures and ethical restrictions.

I feel like people are getting a wrong interpretation of the Corona Virus. Yes this virus can classify as "deadly" but among the 17,000 people, 82% had milk infections, 15% had severe symptoms, and only 3% is classified as critical. Less than 2% of the people with confirmed infections have died, and those who have died, were older men with underlying health problems. I think people in the Bay Area are blowing this "Corona Outbreak" out of proportion.

ReplyDeleteAs serious and tragic the corona virus is, it's important to understand that not everyone has it. I read in an article that Asian Uber/Lyft drivers are being declined rides just because of what they look like. And people in other countries just assume all Asians have been infected. For the most part, people's prejudices are getting in the way of real facts. Asian people aren't being treated equally just because China has the most people infected with the Corona Virus. It doesn't mean every Asian person on the planted is infected.
ReplyDeleteI hated the fact that youtubers are making pranks about this when theres people out there dying.
ReplyDeleteI think that the corona virus is being blown out of proportion in the United States. It is extremely contagious which is dangerous because they don't know what caused it or what the strain is but I don't think it is deadly. People with autoimmune diseases and weak immune system are the ones that should be worried, but not the general public. As of today, one patient in Washington died that was in quarantine for corona but she was a 50 year old woman with other health problems. More people have died of the flu than corona and those who have died abroad in Asia probably didn't have access to the best health care or had other health problems. Of course it is good to be cautious about getting sick but people in the Bay Area are now stocking up on essential food items incase it becomes bigger since a 3rd case was admitted to El Camino Hospital. I think it is a bit extreme to assume the virus is going to become like the plague.
ReplyDeleteAlthough quarantine may seem necessary to guarantee that there is a decrease in the number of people infected, the government needs to take into consideration the impact quarantine has on many people's life. Many may be living a life where two weeks, a week, or even a day of missing work could lead to trouble in their daily lifestyle due to decreased amounts of pay. In addition, it should be made more clear to the public the risk of fatality is at a rise only for the elderly and anyone with preexisting medical issues.
