NBA & Coronavirus

The Coronavirus has already made an impact on our global economy, and it will probably continue to do so even after the issue is resolved. Many stores in the United States will have limited access to items from China, people will stop going out, certain products will sell out of shops, among countless other issues.

One issue is that of sports gatherings. There has been a discussion on whether or not the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will occur this summer, or if it will be canceled or rescheduled. However, after a player was recently tested positive for coronavirus, the NBA has suspended the season.

Just today, a Utah Jazz player was tested positive for the infamous sickness just minutes before their game in Oklahoma City. Although the player in question seemed to have improving symptoms and did not seem severely sick, they called off the game as a precaution and later decided to halt the rest of the season.

Issues like this are certainly a concern for the athletes who have been training to prepare for the season, the owners of the teams who will lose revenue and salaries, and certainly to fans who have bought season tickets or planned to watch upcoming games.

Amid the spread of this virus, it is obvious that all countries will have to take precautions to prevent the spread of this illness, and canceling large sporting events is certainly one of them. There are many other ways that our society will need to change in order to limit the number of cases and deaths in the coming months, but will these changes stick around after the virus is no longer a threat? At the very least, will people take public health more seriously? Are people going to change their habits to keep themselves healthy in the future? How will these changes make a lasting impact on society?

  1. When my dad told me about this, I was shocked because many people's lives revolve around these games. Especially with games that are very popular, making lots of money, it is not an easy decision for them to decide to cancel all future games. However, people have to acknowledge the safety of everyone else, over the money they make. I think that it would be difficult to reschedule big events such as the Olympics because like you said, people have been training and changing their life for this one event. I think that modifications could be made, to increase safety without cancelling the event.
