A former judge named Andrew Napolitano recently wrote a provocative article arguing that the lockdowns that have been implemented to combat this pandemic are unconstitutional and I wondered if he was right.
We have lost our freedom of movement, but mostly because close contact with anyone outside family members we live with is considered dangerous meaning mass gatherings are a public danger. Furthermore, the United States Public Health Service Act allows the federal government to quarantine and Congress's right to regulate commerce between states and other countries means that they can regulate people's travel.
So, while it may seem we have lost some liberties, I believe that between the power of the President and Congress, a nationwide lockdown is legal and entirely possible if need be.

Although these lockdowns have resulted in the loss of constitutional rights, they are necessary. In order to slow the spread of the virus, it's important to make sure people aren't increasing the risk of spreading it by close contact or large groups. Despite the importance of these measures, I do hope that we can end them soon and life can go back to normal, or a relative normal.
