Hundreds gather in California to protest stay at home-orders
More than 200 protesters gathered in Huntington Beach, California, to protest against stay- at-home orders, it was called the "March for Freedom." Many of the protesters held signs reading "Quarantine the sick, not the healthy" and "Open Cali now." Some protesters even believe that the virus was a lie. Also in another case a gathering in San Clemente many protesters gathered they were packed tightly together on the sidewalk, not maintaining the 6 feet of social distance. People in cars also lined up I. streets in support of the protest, honking their horns and slowly driving through downtown San Clemente. Many demonstrators waved flags, chanting and holding signs. "Let me Re-Hire" and "My freedom is essential." Many protesters said the Stay at Home orders have gone too far. In addition to not maintaining distance during the rally, they were also not wearing masks. Other than just being frustrated at the fact that many of them lost their jobs and can't work. They also argue that it's for political reasons. As one said "We do not trust our politicians, we see through this. We don't believe it's for a virus. It's for political reasons. And we can see through that. And we are mad as hell." Also about 100 people in Encinitas, down in the San Diego County, marched along South Coast Highway to protest the closure of beaches, parks and trails, demanding the end of the shutdown. Yet no arrests have been made and no citations have been issued to demonstrators at either of the rallies.

I saw many posts all over social media about these protests and find them very dangerous / inconvenience. The shelter in place is in order to keep people from getting sick / spreading it to others and by grouping together to protest, this is only making the spread of COVID19 worse. I also saw that this was preventing essential workers, like healthcare officials, from getting to work because the protests were causing an absurd amount of traffic. The shelter in place is put in order for our own benefits and not following the rules will only extend it.

ReplyDeleteI think this is interesting because of course, the shelter in place was ordered to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. However, many people are struggling financially, mentally, and emotionally. Many companies had to lay off employees and a lot of people may not be able to financially support themselves because they are required to stay home. I think ultimately it is most important to keep the virus under control while vaccines are being developed.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that people don't understand that staying inside isn't just for their own safety but for others. I don't think people quite understand the science and complicity of COVID-19 that makes it extremely dangerous compared to past global outbreaks. It's terrible how many people have been laid off but that only points to America's lack of preparedness and problems within the system. Those protests are just making it worse and longer for those who are actually listening. It seems that people only want to listen to the government until it stops benefiting them in someway, which is sad. I saw videos of protestors carrying guns and using violence against those trying to stop them.
