Due to the worsening of the coronavirus pandemic, Vladamir Putin grudgingly put off the lavish festivities on May 9 which celebrate the World War II Victory Day. Normally, on V-Day, which in Russia is a public holiday, people attend local military parades, the biggest of which is in Moscow's Red Square. People also give flowers to veterans and lay wreaths at war memorial sites and schools may host performances of wartime poems and songs. At home, families may gather around their table to honor the survivors and remember the fallen before watching their favorite Soviet film about the events. While it is understandable how reluctant Putin was to put off the festivities, given how the coronavirus spreads, they clearly could have led to a huge uptick in cases in Russia.
