The Environmental Protection Agency Chief, Andrew Wheeler, a former coal lobbyist, and the Trump administration have taken advantage of the world's attention being focused on the coronavirus pandemic and used it to press forward a series of rollbacks to ease the coal industry's pollution rules implemented under Obama. They contend that the higher standards ard mercury cleanup standard that the Obama administration set is not "appropriate and necessary", which is necessary for the Clean Air Act to apply.
However, some of the health problems associated with letting coal companies get away with more pollution include harming people's lungs which not only hurts healthy people's lungs but will also exacerbate the symptoms of those trying to recover from the virus. Furthermore, aside from hurting those recovering from the virus, the mercury emissions the plants produce can also cause damage to children's developing brains and have been linked to a series of other ailments. To me, these detriments to health mean that the standard of "appropriate and necessary" applies and we should therefore not be rolling back emission regulations. What do you think?
