On March 24, 3 coronavirus cases were reported to be aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt. After Captain Brett Crozier sent out many unanswered pleas for help evacuating the ship to the US Navy, on March 30, he wrote a letter warning of the rapid spread of the virus aboard the ship and the urgent need to evacuate. On April 2, after the letter had leaked to the press, he was relieved of his command, but action was finally taken. 80% of the ship's 4800 person crew have been evacuated with the remaining contingent being left to guard to two nuclear reactors aboard. However, 585 sailors have tested positive for coronavirus.
When he was escorted off, those under his command applauded him for the actions he took to save them. In response to this, Navy Secretary Thomas Modly flew to Guam and told the sailors off for lauding the actions of their captain and then proceeded to insult their former commanding officer's intelligence. After the public's outcry after hearing a recording of the speech he gave the sailors, Modly resigned his position with the Navy.

I think it's really unfortunate that these sailors were unable to leave their ship. With social distancing guidelines in place across the world, it's really shocking that the US Navy didn't help the sailors on the ship earlier, especially with the virus taking its toll across the ship. While an outbreak may have been a factor in the lack of action, it never should have resulted in the secretary insulting the captain. I hope that, in the future, there can be a better response than something like this.
