The Doll Experiment
The Doll Experiment was created by doctor Kenneth and Mamie Clark in 1940. They conducted a series of experiments known as the doll test to study the psychological effects of segregation on African-American kids. To test the kids he used the first 4 dolls and some that were non-colored kids to test the kid's racial understanding. In the test, the majority of the kids preferred the white dolls and they saw it as something positive.

ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting that even colored baby's chose the white dolls. I thought that colored baby's would have chose the colored doll as well. Why do you think that the colored baby's chose the white doll to? I still don't get why colored people are being seen in a bad way it amazes me on how even baby's at such a small age are beginning to have that mindset this is something very disappointing. I wonder why they saw a difference in the baby's if they were the exact same the only difference was the color. This experiment still amazes me and I want to know more about what is going on in the baby's head when they are being asked to chose between a colored and white doll.
ReplyDeleteI remember learning about this in Psychology last year and I think this a very interesting experiment. I thought it was interesting that even black kids chose the white doll. It could be that they just randomly chose the doll or they thought that doll was prettier. However, it could also be the environment that they are growing up in. If the community they are growing up in, deals with segregation, they are probably unconsciously seeing it happen. We tend to think that just because babies are young, doesn't mean that they can't pick up on what is happening around them.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that children would actually choose the white baby over the colored baby says something in itself. If each child picked the baby with their same skin color, there wouldn't be much shock or discussion because they would be able to identify with either the dark or the light doll. Or, if the results were random, it would just show that the children didn't have a bias or preference toward one doll or another. However, since both the colored and the white children chose the white doll, this shows that they were taught to believe the white doll was better in some way, even if they were unable to identify themselves with that doll.
ReplyDeletei don't really believe in this experiment. their are so many ways that the baby could choose one thing over another.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very disturbing experiment because they had children choose a white or colored baby. A lot of these children don't even know what the differences of race are and yet, at such a young age, all children chose a white baby over a colored baby. This experiment reminds me of the experiment we watched in class that asked if babies were born good or bad. I find these experiments to show how a child is being raised and the nurture part of nature vs nurture.
