Later School Start Times: They're good for you

According to the CDC, the average start time for public schools all across the U.S. is 8:03 AM. This may not sound like much, but considering that most students have to wake up around an hour or two before school, and that students who need to commute further may be forced to wake up even earlier, it's a lot. Some kids have to wake up at 5 AM five days a week just so they can get to school. Studies have shown that this drastically affects students' health- both mental and physical.

Schools who move their start times to later dates show drastic improvements in academic performance. For example, a school in Edina, Minnesota, reported that the verbal SAT score for the top-performing students in their school increased by 146 after moving its start time from 7:25 AM to 8:30 AM. As seen here, an hour of sleep can go a long way.

  1. I read recently that the Mountain View-Los Altos school district may push back school start times in the future. I just wish it was sooner. Every morning I am half asleep during 1st period and am fully awake later in the day. Kids just need more sleep and there has been so many studies explaining the dramatic effects of sleep deprivation. Why can't school start times be pushed back an hour?
