COVID-19 Hysteria

The COVID-19 Virus, commonly known as the Coronavirus is taking the world by storm, and the hysteria follows. The virus which some people believe will cause the downfall of the civilization despite the fact that it has a death rate less that the flu. People frantically washing their hands with hand sanitizer, while being good a hygiene practice, is an overreaction. Some people refuse to even go into public areas because of an irrational fear or the virus. People are stocking up on canned foods, pastas, breads, and other non-perishables believing that they will have to self quarantine and the entire nation will shut down. Only 22 people in the United States have died of the virus as or yesterday (3/9). The only people who have any reason to worry are the Elderly and People with a weak or compromised immune system. To conclude there is no reason for anyone in this class to even worry about the Coronavirus and should continue with their lives as though there is no problem at all.

  1. While there is definitely an overreaction of the public towards COVID-19 (especially when comparing the disease to previous outbreaks of coronavirus like the swine flu), the fact that countries like China have been greatly hindered by quarantines and shutting down of travel has had an enormous effect on the global economy. Since companies' supply chains rely on countries effected by COVID-19 (including Apple, cruise ship companies, airlines, and AirBNB),the effects of the disease are worldwide despite only being a true issue in a select few areas. How this might effect the future of the global economy is very worrisome.

  2. Although this may have been written a bit more than a week ago, it is important to recognize the fact there is no vaccine for the coronavirus that has been discovered. Therefore, the spread of the coronavirus is increasing rapidly and causing the death of many. As our nation and the world are becoming more and more strict on the social distancing needed to decrease the spread of COVID-19, we must act ethically and recognize the impact our actions can have on others rather than ourselves. The danger many senior citizens are in is horrifying and we must be aware that our actions can put their lives at risk as well as anyone else. There are currently 308,547 guaranteed cases internationally with many people who also have the virus without being tested. There have been 13,069 deaths and this number is only increasing.
