before toilet paper

With so many people hoarding toilet paper now, it could make you wonder what people did before toilet paper was even a thing.

Today, millions in the Middle East and Asia still pass on toilet paper by simply using a rinse of water. But, before this, there were more devices.

In ancient Rome, people used something called a tersorium. This is a stick with a vinegar or salt-water soaked sponge attached. One gladiator even shoved one of these (used) sticks down his throat to kill himself because he didn't want to go into the arena.

Another pre-toilet paper device was found in China. This "hygiene stick" was a bamboo or wood stick wrapped in cloth. The sticks found even contained parasites that would usually be found in human intestines.

  1. It's funny how the virus started happening, people's first instinct was to stock up on toilet paper for no reason.

  2. It's odd to think about what life without toilet paper would be like. When I visit my family in India, I often get odd stares from the locals when using toilet paper at public restrooms or they charge westerners for the use of it. My parents accidently ordered about 300$ worth of toilet paper from Amazon a couple weeks ago but we plan on giving it to organizations or the homeless shelters that are all out.
